The playing field just got a whole lot more level for Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSP) trying to acquire telephone numbers, thanks to a recent FCC ruling that attempted to address the need for speed innovation and competition in communications services.
A few weeks ago, the Federal Communications Commission proposed to make it simpler and more seamless for innovative online providers of phone service to access telephone numbers. Currently, wholesale carriers have to obtain telephone numbers by enlisting the help of traditional telephone companies, who serve as the middleman. Not only can this phone number sourcing process be long and tedious for ITSPs, but it can also be incredibly cost prohibitive. The new ruling is part of the ongoing agency-wide effort to modernize rules for today’s broadband marketplace, according to the FCC.
