The State of Cloud Computing in Australia

Australia may be the land down under, but recent findings show that when it comes to cloud computing, the far-off continent is making its way to the top. In its report, “Australia Cloud Services 2013-2017 Forecast and Analysis,” market research firm International Data Center (IDC) released statistics that reveal Australia’s impressive growth in the deployment of cloud services.

According to observations, 86 percent of Australian companies use cloud computing in some regard. This number has grown from the 71 percent recorded this time last year. IDC further predicted that the public market will continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.7 percent over a five year period.

IDC Australia cloud services senior analyst Raj Mudaliar explained that the cloud is “business as usual” for CIOs today. “By 2015, cloud will be just another delivery model for a range of ‘as-a-service’ offerings that are based on infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and software as a service,” Mudaliar added.

In order to truly become a global force in taking advantage of cloud computing, Australia needs to focus on improving its connectivity. Despite scoring high in the areas of data privacy and freedom of information, the country ranked 13out of 14 Asia Pacific countries analyzed for connectivity by the Asia Cloud Computing Association (ACCA) in 2012.

The Aussie government is already prioritizing this goal, having released its National Cloud Computing Strategy in May. The forward-thinking vision emphasizes reinforcing stronger links between the cloud and the National Broadband Network (NBN). Additionally, the report aims to accomplish three main goals: supporting a vibrant cloud services sector, maximizing value of cloud computing in government and promoting cloud computing to small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), not-for-profits and consumers.
